Desiccant and Oxygen Absorber: Different or The same?

Along with the developing of Food industry, a big amount of preservatives methods were born with different operating principles. Sometimes we are confused and do not know which one to use for our products. In this article, we will show you how to choose the right one for you.

Problem that food industry must face with

Actually, accompany with the food companies in a long time, we deeply understand what they have to face with when they preserve their products in supply chain. And how to lengthen the shelf life of product without preservatives and safe for consumers is becoming the most important question. Answer this question, we have launched list of products such as Desiccant and Oxygen Absorber. But they are the same or different?

 

 

What makes them the same?

They both are used to preserve the food fresh, and away from mold and other organisms growing. Therefore, food could be stored much longer without any food preservatives

Besides, they could protect food but outside of the food so perfectly safe for consumers while they do not eat it anyway. That is the unique points compare to many other preservations method in the market. Interesting, right?

Finally, both of them reject the causes which can damage food to preserve it longer: Oxygen and humidity. By that way, they could keep food fresh.

What makes them different?

They work their job with different operating principles.

Desiccants are used to absorb moisture. Moisture can build inside your storage container through temperature shifts, condensation from the humidity in the air during the initial fill-up of your container, or from the moisture contained in the food itself. So it could help the product to keep dry, brittle and inhibit the growth of microorganisms.

- While oxygen absorbers are used to absorb Oxygen. This could eliminate the remained oxygen in the storage container so it could help the product to avoid the damaging agents from oxygen, inhibiting microbial growth.

Application: Although they both can use for Food, but depend on the characteristics of food, Desiccant or Oxygen absorber should be applied.

- For desiccant, producer should use with dried food such as nuts, crackers, farming products, pharmaceuticals and other supporting industry (such as textile, packaging, logistics…)

- However, oxygen absorber should be used for the nutritious food and easy to stale such as fresh cakes, moon cakes, other frozen food,…
